About the tutor
Varvara Neiman was born into an artistic family in St. Petersburg, where as a child she attended the College of Art (СХШ), ranked first in the former USSR for the artistic education of children. Here she studied all aspects and genres of painting, drawing and design for seven years. At the age of 18 she went on to be one of the youngest students admitted to the world famous Academy of Fine Arts (Российская академия художеств), studying Fine Art and specializing in Theater Set Design and Costume Design. In the mid 1990s, after receiving her first Master of Arts (MA) degree, she endeavoured on an artistic career in some of St. Petersburg’s most famous theatres, producing designs for various drama productions.
Following a move to London, Varvara Neiman concentrated on her career as a professional artist, staging exhibitions in Central London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Suffolk, where until recently she had a country home. This period is reflected in her art through a striving for new forms and media, combining her purely classical training with a modern imagination. A kaleidoscope of pastoral scenes, neo-Surrealist paintings, portraits and the acclaimed cityscapes ensued, in an equally diverse range of media – oil, acrylic, gouache and watercolour.
After earning her Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) Varvara Neiman began to teach painting and drawing. As an educator, she relies on her extensive education and wide professional experience in the art world. She currently teaches at various locations in Buckinghamshire, and also conducts private lessons at her studio in Beaconsfield. The themes of her classes are wide in scope: ranging from life drawing, portraiture and oil painting, to abstract art. Her artwork is held in private and Royal collections across Russia, The UK, France and America. To find out more about Varvara, visit her website.
