Still Life in Watercolour
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Suitable for all abilities and ideal for anyone who would like to create a lovely still life painting from direct observation. You will receive expert tuition and encouragement from professional artist, Amanda Nester and the class will take place in the relaxed atmosphere of ArtSmarts characterful studio in Beaconsfield.
SUBJECT MATTER
The tutor will provide the reference material consisting of a variety of objects from vases, bowls, bottles and fabric to fruit, vegetables and flowers.
Depending on the size of the group, students will set up their own still life display to work from or will work in small groups of two or three.
COURSE CONTENT
Setting up a group of objects and using thumbnail sketches to decide on the final composition. Observing light source, areas in shadow, cast shadow and negative space and how to use these to create a 3D image
Some essential techniques : colour mixing, painting wet on wet and dry on wet, colour lifting. How to depict different textures in watercolour. Time will be given to try out these techniques for those who would like to practice before painting. Drawing the composition onto the watercolour paper and beginning their painting. Individual help from the tutor throughout the whole process.
MATERIAL LIST
Students will need to bring:
Watercolour paints* – pans or tubes. A mini paint set e.g. Daler – Rowney Aquafine Mini Travel Set or a Hobbycraft paint set from £3 will do
A4 watercolour paper, preferably Cold Pressed, 300gsm (140lb)
HB or B pencil
Pencil Sharpener
Eraser
Paint brushes – three or four watercolour brushes e.g. 0,2,4,8 (synthetic brushes are fine) Paint mixing palette (can be a white plate)
*Suggested colours – Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Permanent Rose, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Sap green, Raw Umber, Paynes Grey or Black
