Course description

This is a relaxed and open minded course, suitable for all levels. The focus of this course is on improving creativity as well as paint handling skills. The student will have the freedom to try out other media alongside watercolour. Each term we will build on the individual learner’s knowledge of water based media and watercolour techniques. The student will gain an understanding of the creative process through a combination of group exercises, individual projects and personal development tutorials. By the end of the course students will have an improved knowledge of watercolour techniques, colour theory and mixing. You will also gain knowledge of painting materials, art appreciation, creativity, composition and sketching skills.
Suggested Materials
Most students start with a Cotman watercolour set, a Langton Watercolour Pad A3 with a green cover* and a selection of watercolour brushes.
Suggested brushes:
Daler Rowney Aquafine round, size 8
Daler Rowney Aquafine round, size 12
Daler Rowney Aquafine Brushes Liner 0/10 (not needed in the first few sessions)
Not required, but students may feel more comfortable if they bring a pencil and an eraser.
Highly recommended, two pots for water (clean old glass or plastic food pots will do). The school does have water pots available, but they quickly become dirty.
* Paper must be watercolour paper, marked as either Cold Pressed, Not, or Not Hot Pressed (three terms for the same thing).
Experienced students will already have suitable equipment and materials (which may vary from this list). Just make sure it is still fit to be used.

The tutor is happy to discuss other equipment and materials and may make additional suggestions.
